The phrase, "The Beautiful Game," is believed to have been coined by sports commentator Stuart Hall. In his youth, Hall admired Peter Doherty when he went to see Manchester City play and used the term "The Beautiful Game" to talk about Doherty's style of play. And thus, "The Beautiful Game" was born and Hall continued to popularize the phrase throughout his career. However, the exact origins of the phrase are unknown.
In 1977, the football great, Pele, titled his autobiography My Life and the Beautiful Game. In the dedication, Pele wrote, "I dedicate this book to all the people who have made this great game the Beautiful Game."
The phrase has such recognition that it was included in the title for a 13-part series detailing the sport's past: History of Football: The Beautiful Game.
