History / Inspiration
Baltimore had a big year in 1991. Not only was the 410 area code introduced for the first time, but legendary Orioles player/demigod Cal Ripken earned his 2nd career MVP award. Of course, 410 isn't just for Baltimore, it covers the entire Eastern Shore area, just like Orioles fans themselves. It's hard to spend much time anywhere in Maryland without visiting Camden Yards, and if you've been to even one game, you know about the "O." According to Orioles Encyclopedia author Mike Gesker, the tradition of shouting/singing "O" during the national anthem at the beginning of Orioles games began sometime in the 1970s, and is still going strong.
We've heard a nasty rumor that because of the huge increase in demand for mobile phone numbers, a new area code, 667, has been reserved for the Baltimore region, and may be needed as early as 2012. Knowing this city however, we know that nothing will really change, and everyone will just keep on saying "O."
Find out about all the ways that Baltimore makes the "O" it's own on the there there blog.
